Ripe

Bunches of bananas sit in a bowl
while time takes its toll
hungry eyes,
and days go by,
fading like a dream
yellow soon replaces green
flesh, once firm, turns thin
as brown spots dapple skin
a sweetness fills the air, and then
hungry eyes are back again—
not for what was bright and new,
but for what time has ripened through
