Persistence

Our home is shared with industrious cellar spiders. I know this not because I see them often, but because I keep finding their handiwork. I'll spot single silken strands stretched across the bookcase, between the leaves of a houseplant, or in some corner I rarely pay attention to. I casually swat them away each time I stumble upon one. It occurred to me that as persistently as the spider rebuilds its web, I take it down. It's a cycle, almost a dance, that has continued week after week.

I can relate to these spiders. I spin new, yet similar, webs each day. My webs are routines and repeated tasks: chores, cooking, and everything that falls under the umbrella of parenting. I busily weave all day long, yet by the next morning I often feel as though I have nothing to show for it.

Where has my web gone?

It never seems to stay, and I must start again. I imagine the spider never stops to wonder whether yesterday's web was worth the effort. It simply begins again.

Spiders are instinctively driven to build webs—for shelter, for food, and for their offspring. Much of what I build each day is for the same reasons. Meals are eaten, toys return to the floor, laundry accumulates again, but the work is not meaningless just because it must be repeated.

And it's not only work. A web can be woven with joy. I can turn on music while I cook, play peek-a-boo with Alice while I fold laundry, or pretend I'm searching for goblins in Oliver's mouth while I brush his teeth. Each task is only a single strand. On its own, it seems insignificant. But over weeks, months, and years, those strands become something intricate and lasting; a home, a childhood, a family.

Webs are delicate, yet strong. Most go unnoticed until the light catches them just so. It's easy to believe that only the extraordinary leaves a lasting mark. But a family is shaped less by grand accomplishments than by thousands of ordinary acts repeated faithfully. Like a spider's web, a home is woven one nearly invisible strand at a time.
